On the 15th of September 2020, I moved from London to Bristol. Whilst checking into my student accommodation at Almero’s Tamarillo House, I realised it was my first time living alone and being independent. I was scared given the current global uncertainty, but I knew I would be okay, and these were my first steps towards adulthood.
I promised myself two things on the day that I moved out: firstly, I would be more social, and secondly and I would take care of myself both physically and mentally. Socialising during the pandemic would be difficult, but even harder due to my introversion.
Keep Social Virtually
If you’re stuck at home and want to socialise, I recommend joining a social club at your university. I joined my university’s Film Club before the term started, and I have made some great friends.
Reach Out to Peers
Creating a WhatsApp group with your class peers is a great way to get to know your classmates outside of the curriculum. You can plan social calls and hang out virtually, be that on Netflix Party or playing Among Us. Once lockdown ends it will be fantastic to then meet up for a socially distanced coffee at a local hangout. Strengthening relationships with your peers can greatly improve your experience in your course by creating a sense of community within the course.
Formalise Your Online Lectures
With most lectures happening on Zoom, I like to keep a dedicated space for work in my studio. I have my notebook to take notes, a bottle of water, and stationery near me, which helps me get into the working mindset. I also enjoy switching up where I sit, it makes working at home not as dull; so sometimes I sit at the study-desk and others at my dining table, however never on my bed.
Sharpen Up for the Webcam
Because my lectures are live, it is compulsory to put my webcam on. I like this, because it motivates me to wake up, brush my teeth and get dressed out of my pajamas.
Since it can be difficult to find the motivation to get up and start your day, I suggest maybe play some music while getting ready.
Treat yourself when you wake up, get dressed and get ready for your lectures. I love to do my best and change up my breakfast menu everyday - sometimes I eat cereal, sometimes an egg wrap, sometimes sausage, kidney beans, and bread, etc.
Make Time for Your Mind and Body
After a long day of Zoom classes, I am mentally exhausted, so I do some sort of exercise, dance to music or go out for walks. Getting your heartrate up and even better getting fresh air is a great way to wind down from a long day.
I recommend trying to take time away from your computer; cook a new recipe, listen to a podcast or music, read a book or call a friend or family member for a chat.
Prioritise Your Space
I’m so glad that I feel at home in my flat, I have made it mine as much as possible. I truly recommend making your flat a sanctuary, it really helps during the lockdown. It doesn’t have to mean spending money on your space – just keeping it clean and tidy, and slowly accumulating items to accentuate your space is the perfect way to do it.
I’m very grateful and happy that I chose Bristol, and especially that I found great student housing through Almero. Bristol is a city buzzing with creativity and beauty, and it is fantastic being so centrally-located.
