Introduction to the University of Leeds
Leeds University
As you may be aware, Almero Student Mansions has been excited to make the foray into Leeds of late, having opened some of our best student accommodation to date in the city. One of the reasons for us venturing into Yorkshire’s busiest city, was of course the excellent calibre of its universities, not least University of Leeds. One of the top 200 universities in the world and gaining in reputation all the time, we thought it was about time we covered on of the UK’s most revered institutions here at the Almero blog.
The University of Leeds Profiled
The University of Leeds is a classic red brick university located in the heart of West Yorkshire. Although not officially founded until the early 20th century, its roots lie in its origins as the Yorkshire College of Science over a hundred years previously.
Given the multicultural nature of Leeds and indeed Yorkshire as a whole, the college was one of the very first in the UK to offer quality education to students of all faiths and backgrounds. This has been seen as many to be a challenge to the exclusivity of universities such as Cambridge and Oxford.
Student Population
The University of Leeds currently has around 33,000 students which makes it the 5th largest institution of its kind in the country, out of 137. Outside the obvious top two universities, Leeds consistently ranks up there with the best of the rest alongside the likes of Manchester, Nottingham and Edinburgh.
Some notable alumni who have graduated from The University of Leeds and gone on to achieve great things are:
Piers Sellers
Jack Straw
Sayeeda Warsi
There is also a vast range of Nobel Laureates who have graduated from the University of Leeds.
Leeds University Union
Like any university worth its salt, Leeds SU (or Leeds University Union as it is affectionately known), is a big reason for so many students choosing it. There is just so much for students to get up to through the union, from discounts and offers to sports clubs and social events. Aside from your all-important studies, the union is the heartbeat of Leeds University and will allow you to make the very most out of your experience. You can take a look at their very impressive website to learn more, but any time spent at the University of Leeds will surely be defined by the good times you have at Leeds University Union.
Leeds University Campus
Central to any university experience is of course the campus itself. This is where you will be spending the majority of your time, either mooching to lectures or hanging out with your friends, so it makes a big difference. Thankfully, the campus at Leeds University is one of the largest in the UK and is a beautiful backdrop for your higher and further education. You are just a short walk from the city’s thriving city centre meaning you are just a stone throw away from everything that is going on.
The student community in Leeds is bursting with culture and as you will see from visiting the university website, there are all sorts of events, exhibitions, sports and student exhibitions going on throughout the academic year.
