From intern to employee

We have covered internships quite a bit here at Almero Student Mansions over the years. From tips on how to find the best student jobs to how you should approach these all important placement, internships are a hot topic for the modern student.

Something many websites and resources fail to address however, is that all-important transition from intern to employee, once your studies have concluded. This is something many students fail to consider, as behaving like an intern once you start your career could result in you not quite achieving the potential you undoubtedly have.

With this in mind, we have put our heads together here at Almero HQ and formed this guide to making that transition from intern to employee when you finally land that permanent job in the industry you have been so eager to break into during your studies.

Own Your Internship

Much of the ground work for success when it comes to your permanent job will be done during your internship. By impressing the suitable personnel and getting yourself noticed, you will inevitably stand a better chance of getting noticed when you are applying for a permanent role, and you should also have a portfolio that will give you a competitive edge over other applicants.

Although your student job and your permanent job should be approached very differently, ensure you do everything you can during your apprenticeship or work placement to guarantee success when the time comes for something more long term.

Keep a Record of Your Placement

A fantastic way to approach apprenticeships or other internships is to keep a diary or journal of what you get up to during your placement. This way, you can tailor you CV around this when applying for a permanent job and this will be likely to cater for exactly what the firm is looking for.

You will most likely be required to provide a write-up of some description of your internship anyway so this will always be a useful exercise, but you could really use this to aid that transition from intern to employee and it will refresh your mind as to the kind of things you will need to excel in when such a time comes.

Integration Is Key

Aside from the excellent work you will do doubt be doing during your internship, integrating with the community at work is a great way of getting your name noticed amongst the upper echelons of the company.

Eat where they eat, attend events and generally mingle but be sure you have something intelligent and relevant to say should you be spoken to. This may seem like a nerve wracking prospect but you will no doubt be applauded for your confidence and you will of course be learning the mechanisms of your chosen industry.

It is very important not to overdo this one however, as you could come across a little annoying if you are constantly hanging around company directors with little to input. So, choose your battles carefully but when you do, take your chance to show you are a star if the future and should be listened to. You never know, one of these guys could be interviewing you or be part of the process in a year so.

 Act The Part

One of the biggest challenges for students looking to take that step from intern to employee is around attitude. When you are a student you are expected to work hard but it is of course perfectly acceptable to have a good time and embrace the more social aspects of the workplace, but this can’t last forever.

No-one is saying you can’t go for drinks with colleagues or live for the weekend but when making that step up, your superiors will be looking for that professional attitude. This may mean working late or taking work home with you, taking shorter lunches to get tasks done or stepping out of your comfort zone a little, but in the long run you will be making an excellent impression and ensuring that you are seen as a long term fixture in the company.

The common theme throughout our tips for making that transition from intern to employee is quite clear really and comes down to attitude. Make the right noises and showing you are keen without being a nuisance is very important but at the end of the day, the quality of your work will shine through. If you are going to be a talent then the guys with the experience at your company will be able to tell very quickly, so stick to the above to ensure that nothing silly lets you down.

Ultimately, working hard and being yourself should see you get the job of your dreams. To read more student tips and tricks like this one be sure to take a look through the rest of the Almero Student Mansions blog!
