Fun ways to celebrate Valentine's Day on campus

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, many students around the UK may well be scratching their heads as to what they can do with their significant other, especially if they are on a tight budget.

Despite the majority of restaurants in your local area most likely charging extortionate prices for romantically themed meals, there is actually a number of ways that you can have a memorable evening on Valentine’s Day as a student.

The Almero Student Mansions team has therefore put together a list of fun ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day on campus and at home, without having to raid too much of one’s student loan.

Netflix & Chill

You knew we couldn’t really put together a modern guide to celebrating Valentine’s Day on campus without mentioning good old Netflix. Whether House of Cards, Breaking Bad, Mad Men or Friends is your thing, settling down to a good old box set binge could well be the perfect way to celebrate in. 2018.

Of course, you will need to agree on what to watch and chivalry may well win the day for most, but with the Netflix selection growing all the time and the ability to watch on your tablet, games console or your smart TV, pretty much every student should be able to gain access to a Netflix account this Valentine’s Day.

In the interests of fairness, we do have to point out that you can find some great movies and box sets on the likes of Amazon Prime and Sky Go too, so be sure to check out all your options before settling down to a Valentine’s Day at home with your special someone.

Enjoy a Mixtape Together

Mixtapes may be excruciatingly cringe worthy but there is surely no day in the year more suitable for one of these, than Valentine’s Day. Their heyday may have been in the eighties in the age of the hi-fi and when music was far less accessible than today’s age of Spotify or Deezer, but mixtapes are still more popular than one would think.

In fact there are actually mixtape DJ’s out there and there is an art to making the perfect compilation. Should you be up to the task, then why not put together the perfect selection for your Valentine and play it on the big day. Not only is this likely to get you valuable brownie points but is a great way to show off how hip you are with your contemporary and trendy taste in music.

If you’ve forgotten how to burn a CD, well because nobody does this anymore, you can find out just how by clicking here. Alternatively, you can just make a playlist in Spotify or Soundcloud, and send the link to that special someone.

Find Somewhere Scenic

One thing Valentine’s Day students love, is finding some picturesque locations close to your campus. Not only is this free, but it can be a great way to get away from uni for a bit and do some exploring in the Bristol, Nottingham or Exeter countryside.

All our Almero Student Mansion locations are blessed with quintessential British countryside and if you can get lucky with a sunset, then it could well turn out to be the best Valentine’s Day you’ve ever had.

Remember it is February though, and we live in England, so wrap up warm, get a picnic together and a flask of hot chocolate (or something stronger if you so desire) and find an area of outstanding natural beauty. You can find some recommended locations here.

Celebrate Being Single

Our final fun way to celebrate Valentine’s Day is for anyone who is unlucky (or lucky, as the case may be) to be single this year. Valentine’s Day at home doesn’t have to be a sombre affair though especially if you have a few other buddies who are in the same position. Why not stock up on your favourite snacks and drinks, and have a little soiree at home to celebrate the fact you are young, free and single this Valentine’s Day?

No one knows what the future holds and you may well find you have an even better time having fun with your mates! Not the most festive choice we admit, but if you are single this year it doesn’t mean you can’t have fun on Valentine’s Day.

As you can see, having fun on Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to cost the earth and anyone can enjoy the day on campus if you approach it properly. We hope our guide has given you some inspiration for Valentine’s Day 2018 and if you enjoyed this article, you can find lots more student advice pieces right here at the Almero blog.
